Quick Facts - Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems
![]()
| Modified roofing systems use the basics of Built-Up Roofing where redundancy is the key and bitumen is the waterproofing and adhesive, but is updated wih polymer technology. This technology was developed in Europe and is still widely used today in both the United States and overseas. | |
| Polymer Modifiers: A.P.P (Atactic Polypropylene) & S.B.S. (Sequenced Butadeine Styrene) | |
| Polymers are added to improve the products workability over wide temperature ranges as well as to improve toughness and retain water resisitant properties of built-up roofing. | |
| Reinforcement is added to the sheet to act as a carrier for the modified bitumen as well as to provide tensile strength, puncture and tear resistance, deminsional stability, and in some cases, fire resistance. | |
| APP types applied by heat-fusion of factory applied coating or by cold applied modified modified adhesives | |
| SBS types frequently applied in hot bitumen; can be torch or cold adhesive applied | |
| Modified Bitumen - polymers are factory blended with asphalt, and applied to both sides of a reinforcing carrier sheet. These are frequently referred to as "factory premanufactured" sheets. | |
| Many systems using modified bitumens will use at least a base sheet. Others may use multiple ply underlayments, similar t to built-up systems. | |
| Typical surfacing of Modified Bitumen Roofing Systems are Granules, Foil Face, Emulsion Coating, or some type of Aluminum Coating. Many products are available to suit the customers individual needs. |
